For some people it is recommended by their doctors and nutritionists that they start a diet program with certain restrictions beyond what is provided for in the Zone Diet alone. The reason for this is to restrict the foods and products that the human body was not originally designed to process and digest. These items include: Wheat Gluten, Dairy, and some Soy products. This set of dietary restrictions is referred to as the Paleo Diet.
The information below gives you an idea of what eating the Paleo Zone 8 Week Program looks like and how it can help you to lose weight, teach you how to eat, and maintain your weightloss into the future:
Paleo Diet (first 4 weeks)
The Paleolithic Diet adheres to a very basic principle that humans should eat only the foods that were available back in the paleolithic period. This means processed foods, animal dairy, wheats and glutens, and anything else that has been influenced by the food manufacturing process needs to be eliminated. These foods are then still portioned to the science of eating 40% Carbohydrate, 30% Lean Protein, and 30% Favorable Fats. The most important part of this time period is NO GLUTEN!
Carbohydrate: Eating whole fruits and vegetables is highly encouraged and keep them raw in most cases is highly recommended as your body is able to enjoy and take advantage of the natural nutrients made available in fruits in vegetables in their pure state.
Lean Proteins: High quality grade cuts are most recommended as they provide the finest fuel for your body. Always thoroughly cooked, items such as whole chicken breast, pork tenderloin, and sockeye salman provide wonderful sources of amino acids, omega 3 fatty acids, and other complex proteins that the human body uses to regenerate new cells and revitalizes your organs.
Favorable Fats: In many cases these come hand-in-hand with the lean proteins as they occur in nature. When not available these can be found using olive oil, nut oil, and other natural occurring oils.
The result of eating in this manner is that your body will start to release excess fat by virtue of having balanced insulin through eating the 40/30/30 proportion. In addition by not eating the wheat glutens and processed foods you will be able to take full advantage of all the food you eat as fuel and your body will not store it as fat. This accelerates weight loss and will quickly give you the proper cravings for whole foods.
Zone Diet Inspired (second 4 weeks)
During the second half of your 8 week program we start to ease the restrictions on some items. This means the introduction of dairy, soy and legumes into some of the meals. Gluten is still restricted! It is important for your body to process and use all the foods you are taking in and gluten can provide a barrier to that which can be detrimental to better health and weight loss. As you start to add in dairy, soy, and legumes here are the items you will see (or that we recommend):
Dairy: Yogurt, cheese (goat and cow), and sour cream. It is important to take into account the fat content as part of your 40/30/30 portioning.
Soy: Edamame, tofu, soy protein powders, and "veggie meats". Again with these it is important to take into account the amount of protein as part of your portioning. Also, be sure to watch sodium content when using different "veggie meats" as that can be more detrimental than the benefits of the vegetable.
Legumes: Lentils, black beans, garbanzo beans, and hummus.
The Future (weeks 9 through forever)
Once you have completed this 8 week food program you should notice some key differences both in yourself and how you view food:
Weight Loss: Depending on your body and how much weight you had to lose, you should have seen weight loss ranging between 2 and 5 pounds per week. This means in 8 weeks you should have lost 16 to 40 pounds. Each person is different so do not feel discouraged if you are moving slower. The health benefits come at any speed of weight loss!
Taste and Cravings: Your body is now trained on its own to find distasteful the foods that are processed (white flours and processed sugars), high in sodium, and outside of the 40/30/30 portioning. This leads you to be attracted to the whole foods that had been provided to you during the Paleo Zone meal program.
Portioning: Eating until you are satisfied will have all new meaning. It will feel natural for you to control your portioning of meals to the sizes you have been eating. In addition you will feel the need to eat smaller meals more often in order to keep your insulin level balanced throughout the day. The 8 weeks of training give you the natural ability to accomplish this.
